Cascade Horizon Band is affiliated with the New Horizons Bands senior band program. The program began in 1991 at New York's prestigious Eastman School of Music. In 2003, when the Cascade Horizon Band was formed, it was the 75th band to join the program. There are now over 165 bands internationally. (One of the newest bands is in Iceland).
Cascade Horizon Band began with twelve members; It has grown to over 70 members. The majority of the members are in their 60's and 70's. Starting out at the Jr. High beginning band level so everyone could learn to read music and develop good instrument tone, Director Sue Steiger has guided the band to ever more difficult music. CHB is now a full sounding band playing concert music, jazz, swing, show tunes and Sousa marches
The band averages twelve public appearances a year. The concerts, free to the public, have led to a devoted following. CHB hopes to broaden its horizons by booking a concert tour in eastern Oregon and in 2012 host a band camp for other Horizon Bands.
The Cascade Horizon Band was recently chosen to play on January 16 at the Oregon Music Educators Conference in Eugene. The band, chosen after auditioning, was the first senior band in Oregon to ever play at the conference. What a privilege it was to play in the Hult Center and be directed along with Sue Steiger by Dr. Roy Ernst, the founder of the national Horizons Band program.
The goal of the Cascade Horizon band is to bring the joy of music into the hearts of the community, enrich the lives of its members by playing good music together and have fun. You can read more about the band on the web at cascadehorizonband.org
